India, also known as Bharat, is a country located in South Asia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean in the south, the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west and the Himalayas in the north. It shares land borders with Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. It has two islands namely the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakhswadeep islands. These share a maritime border with Myanmar and Maldives respectively. Sri Lanka, another independent country, also shares its maritime borders with India.
India is the world's seventh largest country, it is also the worlds largest democracy. It maintains the worlds third largest army and is a nuclear state having tested its missiles in Pokran.
India is a sovereign democratic republic. It consists of 29 states and seven union territories. Its national capital is at New Delhi.
