Buddhism is based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha, who was born in Ancient India, in the city of Lumbini, in what is now known as Nepal. It is thought that he was born in the fifth century BCE.

According to most estimates, it has about 350 million adherents.
Major schools[]
It consists of two major schools: Mahayana and Theravada. These divisions reflect a combination of doctrinal differences and regional syncretisms.
Mahayana is in turn divided into East Asian (including Pure Land, Chan/Zen, Nichiren, Shingon and others) and Tibetan (sometimes grouped with Shingon under the term Vajrayana).
